We bought this 2 story house with a basement because my husband and I fell in love with the floor plan.  The house needed some work and some updating but it had as they say “great bones”.  This was this last summer after we had a new front door installed and painted the shutters.  We’ve also added to the landscaping as well.

First impressions are lasting, so we wanted our entry foyer to really make a statement.  I used magnetic primer and chalkboard paint to create a welcome sign that is easily changeable with the seasons/holidays.

As a way of letting our walls tell our story I hung black and white pictures of all the houses we’ve called home on the wall going up the stairs.

I also created a little drop spot for guests since we don’t have a coat closet nearby.

In the dining room I stenciled one wall to create a focal point in the room.

I recently made a change to the vignette over the buffet creating chalkboard panels from inexpensive door mirrors.

My husband works from home so we converted the formal living room to an office. This past summer we had a contractor build some bookcases to give him some much needed storage space.

Our kitchen is where I spend most of my time.  We did a mini-renovation back in 2011.  We distressed the builder grade cabinets, had some moulding added, removed the cabinet over the stove to make space for a range hood, and had a backsplash installed.

One of the very first diy projects I did in our home was whitewashing the brown brick fireplace.  It really made a huge difference in our family room.

I also painted the sliding doors black and stenciled some drop cloths for curtain panels. Recently I  painted stripes in this little hallway to break up all the red and add a fun focal point.

I think it’s pretty obvious that I love color and pattern!
Our master bedroom is still not “done” – I mean really is it ever? – but here’s a look at the progress.

I went bold with the wall color.  It really lets the tone of the furniture shine.  I carved out a workspace for myself using a desk as a nightstand.  This is where I blog.

I love to read so I created a little reading nook in a corner.

I’m not quite done with my daughter’s room, but my son’s room was finally wrapped up last year.

I built him a storage bed out of closet maid cubicals and created a headboard from pegboard.

He requested a Star Wars bedroom so I painted the ceiling dark and added some glow in the dark star decals and some x-wing fighter decals I bought on Etsy.

In the spring, summer and fall we spend a lot of our time in the backyard.  This is our outdoor living room – a.k.a. the deck.

Below the deck is our outdoor dining room on the patio.  My dad and I laid these pavers in an area that was once a giant mud/gravel pit.  Now this space is actually usable.

You can find more deets on my home tours page.  And if you’d like to follow along this year I’ll probably be tackling the bathrooms, the basement, and the guest bedroom.  It takes a while to make a house a home.  We’ve lived here for almost 3 years and we still aren’t done!  But we sure are enjoying the process!  —  Our Fifth House.
