Cleaning Area Rug – Three Easy Steps

Cleaning area rugs (both sides) can be a little bit of a pain!  If I were to take a picture of my dining room at the new house you’d be less than impressed (lots of unpacking still to be done).   So for now we’ll stick with the Rancher Pics as I show you how I vacuum both sides of my area rugs.  I have had the IKEA Tarnby Rug — just $99 for a 6′ 7″ x 9′ 10″ for a few years now and have been very pleased.   Getting an area rug in the exact spot you like it takes a little effort.  Here’s how I clean my area rug without moving it!

Remove all the furniture from the area rug.  (I needed Stud’s help because my dining room table is pretty heavy).  After it’s cleared, vacuum the top surface of the entire rug.

After rug’s top surface is vacuumed well, fold the rug in half, so the rug overlaps itself precisely.

Vacuum the floor under the rug and the exposed portion of rug.

Unfold the rug and replace your furniture.  Seriously it’s that easy!  I love being able to clean both sides and the floors underneath without having to reposition my rug!  Easy fixes are  my favorite!

Simply brilliant. Thanks for sharing something that should be obvious but in the “heat of the cleaning” moments never occurred to me.

Your wood floor is so pretty Aimee, and this is a great tip on keeping the area clean. Easy to overlook for sure! xo

  3. Great tip! I haven’t bought area rugs yet but thinking about it!
